Beware of "FREE MUSIC LESSONS " & Other Sneaky Gimmicks
When looking for music lessons beware of gimmicks like "FREE LESSONS" since you will not learn very much from an uncertified Musc Instructor. In fact 80% of "Music Teachers" with ads in the GTA are student or intern teachers themselves - still learning and trying to earn a few extra dollars. So when shopping around, be sure to ask for more than the price - ask "What music degrees and credentials do you hold and from what university?" and ask them to fax or show you their resumes. Many instructors claim to hold degrees or ARCT certifications when they do not. Those that do have them, proudly display their achievement on the walls off their music school or homes. By using a certified music instructor (one with a minimum of a Masters Degree in Music, Music Instruction, or Music Theory) you will learn approximately 30% more and faster. That savings of time translates into less lessons and less money to you. Other gimmicks include long contracts or hefty non-refundable deposits designed to keep you locked into keeping an instructor you may not like. The best instructors do not need to give away FREE lessons or require tricks to keep you as a satisfied customer. To learn whether you chose a good instructor, just ask them for ten student referrals that are at least a year old and call them. This ad is a public service announcement for parents and music students everywhere. Good luck in your learning journey through the wonderful world of music!
